Most people have never used an AI assistant, and the reason is not scepticism. It is friction. Find the app, download it, create an account, verify an email, learn a new interface. Luzia deleted all of it. You save a phone number, send a WhatsApp message, and you are using AI. That single decision is why a Spanish startup from 2023 now claims 85 million users while better-funded rivals fight over people who already download things. The product is genuinely good at what it does. Its newest feature, though, asks for access most users will approve without reading.
Why Living Inside WhatsApp Changes Everything
Distribution beats capability for consumer products, and Luzia understood that earlier than most. WhatsApp has over two billion users, and in Spain, Latin America and much of the world it is not one app among many. It is where people’s entire social and family life happens.
Putting an assistant inside that means the adoption barrier disappears. A grandparent who would never install an AI app will absolutely message a contact. A student without storage space on a cheap Android phone gets the same access as someone on a flagship.
The language decision reinforced it. Luzia was built Spanish-first at a time when most assistants treated Spanish and Portuguese as translation targets rather than primary languages. Serving a market properly that others served as an afterthought is a large part of why the numbers grew.
What Luzia Actually Does Well
Eight core capabilities appear on the site: mathematics, writing, translation, code, explanation, sport, transcription and image generation. Alongside those sit image upload, PDF upload and web search.
Voice note transcription deserves specific credit. Send Luzia a voice message and it returns text within seconds. In WhatsApp cultures where long voice notes are the default communication style, that is a genuinely useful daily tool rather than a demo feature.
Translation is the second standout, for the same reason. Being able to forward a message and get it translated inside the same conversation removes a step that other assistants make you leave the app for.

LuziClaw: Read This Section Before You Enable It
LuziClaw is Luzia’s agent mode, currently in beta in selected countries. It does not wait for a prompt. It connects to your WhatsApp and surfaces things you agreed to do.
The examples on Luzia’s own homepage make the scope clear. One reads that you agreed to send Laura the electrician’s contact three days ago, and asks whether to send it. Another notes that in the dinner group chat you said you would bring dessert, and offers to remind you on Friday.
Those are useful. They also mean the assistant is reading your personal and group conversations, identifying commitments, and retaining them across days. That is a far larger permission than answering a question you asked it.
What enabling LuziClaw actually means
- It reads conversations you did not send to it. Personal chats and group chats are analysed for commitments, not just messages addressed to Luzia.
- Other people did not consent. Laura and the dinner group never agreed to have their messages processed by an AI service. You made that decision for them.
- It retains context across days. The example references something agreed three days earlier, so conversation history is stored, not processed and discarded.
- It can draft and send on your behalf. One example shows a completed complaint letter awaiting approval to send.
- The model is never named. Luzia does not disclose which AI provider processes this data or where.
- It is beta, in selected countries. Which countries is not specified, and beta features change without notice.
None of this is hidden, and Luzia is a Spanish company operating under GDPR, which is meaningful. But read the privacy policy before connecting it, and consider whether the people in your group chats would agree.
The Free Tier Is Free Because You Watch Ads
Luzia’s marketing leads with free, and the core product genuinely is. What the homepage does not put upfront is how it is funded.
The answer sits in the Luzia+ feature list. Among the paid benefits is no ads, described as being 100 percent free of distractions. That confirms the free tier is advertising-supported.
Luzia+ also adds twice the length on images and chats, an advanced reasoning mode, multiple AI characters, higher quality image generation and unspecified exclusive tools. The price for all of this is not published anywhere on the site, which is an odd omission for a consumer subscription.
| Tier | Price | What you get | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | All core features across every platform, no signup required | Advertising, standard reasoning, shorter chats |
| Luzia+ | Not published | No ads, advanced reasoning, longer chats, better images, multiple AI characters |
Is Luzia AI Worth Using?
For the audience it was built for, yes, and enthusiastically. Luzia solved the hardest problem in consumer AI, which is not capability but adoption. Removing the download, the account and the interface means people actually use it, and a good assistant used daily beats a great assistant nobody opens. The Spanish-first approach and multi-platform reach are genuinely well executed.
The reservations are about disclosure rather than quality. The 85 million user figure and the number one ranking claim carry no source. The model behind it is never named. The free tier is ad-supported without saying so plainly. And LuziClaw asks for access to your conversations in a way that most users will approve in one tap without considering what it covers.
Our position: use the free version for translation, transcription and everyday questions, where it is excellent and costs nothing. Read the privacy policy properly before enabling LuziClaw, and keep a stronger assistant for anything that actually matters.
What Luzia Should Fix Next
- Publish the Luzia+ price on the website rather than only inside the app.
- State clearly on the homepage that the free tier is advertising-supported.
- Name the AI model or provider powering the assistant.
- Source the 85 million user and number one ranking claims with dates.
- Explain LuziClaw’s data access in plain language at the point of enabling it.
- Publish which countries have LuziClaw beta access.
