Every AI assistant has the same weakness. It is brilliant at general knowledge and useless about your company, because it has never seen your Q3 pricing discussion, your incident postmortem or the thread where someone decided not to ship that feature. Slack’s answer is to put the assistant where all of that already lives. Slackbot reads your channels, your files, and your connected apps, then answers from them. That is a real advantage, and 2026 has turned it from a summariser into something closer to a colleague. The awkward part is finding out which plan you need to actually use it.
Which Plan Actually Gives You The AI
This is the question almost every search about Slack AI is really asking, so here it is as a table rather than buried in a comparison chart.
| AI feature | Free | Pro | Business+ | Enterprise+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thread and channel summaries | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Huddle notes and transcripts | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Third-party AI assistant apps | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Slackbot personal AI agent | Trial only | Trial only | Yes | Yes |
| AI search across your workspace | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Daily recaps and file summaries | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| AI workflow generation | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| AI translations and message explanations | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Enterprise search across other systems | No | No | No | Yes |
The free plan has no AI features whatsoever. Pro gives you summaries and huddle notes, which are useful but are not what people mean when they say Slack AI. Everything else, including Slackbot itself, starts at Business+.
Slack states that a limited Slackbot trial is opening to Free and Pro users, with ongoing access reserved for Business+ and Enterprise+, plus Salesforce CRM customers who connect their accounts.
What Slackbot Has Actually Become
Slackbot used to be a joke bot that reminded you about things. In 2026 it is positioned as an AI teammate with access to your entire workspace, and the feature list backs that up.
Big Mode gives it a full-screen workspace for longer work. Deep Research lets it tackle open-ended questions rather than quick lookups. Skills and Skill Sets let it perform bundled tasks. Working in channels means one person’s answer becomes visible to the whole team rather than trapped in a private chat.
Alongside it sit Agentforce for Salesforce agents, Claude for fast answers, and Slack Code, which brings coding agents into channels so a whole team can watch and steer what an agent builds.
The Data Answer Most Vendors Will Not Give You
Data transparency becomes even more important when software processes sensitive employee information, as discussed in Essence AI’s workplace menstrual health and privacy review
The company states that AI in Slack runs within Slack’s own infrastructure, that it does not share customer data with large language model providers, and that it does not use customer data to train language models. It also states that the models are hosted directly inside Slack’s own AWS virtual private cloud.
Compare that to the many AI tools in this category that never name a model, never say where processing happens, and never address training. For a compliance team evaluating whether internal conversations can go anywhere near an AI system, this is the difference between a yes and a no.
What a Slack AI rollout really costs
- Business+ is the real AI price. At $15 per user monthly, billed annually, a 30-person team pays $5,400 a year. A 100-person team pays $18,000.
- Monthly billing costs more. Business+ is $18 per user monthly if you do not commit annually, a 20 percent premium.
- Slackbot has plan limits. Business+ customers on invoice plans can buy Flex Credits through Salesforce to raise message limits, which is a usage charge on top of a per-seat fee.
- The free plan forgets. Ninety days of message history, and data deleted after a year. Any AI reading your history would have almost nothing to read.
- The 50 percent discount is temporary. It applies for three months, only on monthly plans bought within seven days of creating a team, and standard pricing resumes afterwards.
- Enterprise search is a further step up. Searching across connected apps and databases, rather than just Slack, requires Enterprise+ at $45 per user monthly.
Slack does run a fair billing policy, crediting you back for members who go inactive across a 28-day period, which genuinely helps larger organisations.
How Good Are The Published Numbers?
Slack publishes several performance claims, and unlike most vendors, it footnotes them. Five hours saved weekly with Slackbot and 94 percent of users seeing positive ROI are attributed to Salesforce internal data. A 312 percent three-year ROI and $51 million in collaboration gains come from a 2026 Forrester Total Economic Impact study. A 35 percent increase in time saved through automations cites a sample of between 247 and 1,696 respondents.
Naming and dating sources puts Slack well ahead of the field. It is still worth reading them for what they are. Salesforce internal data is self-reported, and Forrester Total Economic Impact studies are commissioned by the vendor being studied. Both are normal industry practice, and neither is dishonest, but neither is independent either.
The usage figures are harder to argue with, since more than a billion messages sent daily comes from earnings remarks, which carry regulatory weight that marketing copy does not.
Is Slack AI Worth Paying For?
If your company genuinely runs in Slack, yes. Context is the thing every other AI assistant lacks, and Slack has it by default. Slackbot answering from your real conversations, files, and connected apps is qualitatively different from a chatbot guessing. The integration depth is unmatched, support is strong on every paid plan, and the data handling position is clearer than almost any competitor’s.
The honest criticism is the packaging. Marketing the product as an AI work platform while the free tier has zero AI, and Pro has only summaries, sets up an expectation the entry plans do not meet. Business+ at $15 per user is defensible for what it delivers, but buyers should know that is the actual price of Slack AI rather than the $7.25 headline.
Our position: if you already pay for Pro and your team is drowning in channels, price Business+ for three months and measure whether people stop asking each other where something was decided. That single behaviour change is what you are buying.
What Slack Should Fix Next
- Put basic Slackbot access on Pro permanently rather than as a limited trial.
- Publish Slackbot message limits by plan on the pricing page instead of in a help article.
- Explain Flex Credits pricing publicly rather than through a sales conversation.
- Extend free plan history beyond 90 days, since the current limit makes AI on free pointless.
- Commission or cite at least one independent, non-vendor-funded ROI study.
- Clarify which specific models power each AI feature, having already been clear about where they run.
